Last week, (November 20, 2016) Selena Gomez, the American actress and singer, made a rare public appearance at the American Music Awards (AMAs) since announcing in August that she was checking into rehab to confront her depression and anxiety.

In her acceptance speech for Favorite Female Artist, Gomez addressed her hiatus and encouraged viewers who may be struggling themselves to get help. Gomez told fans, “If you are broken you don’t have to stay broken.” Whether you are a fan of her music or not, we applaud Gomez’s willingness to expose her vulnerability, and we believe there are four main takeaways from her journey:
